Basato
su fatti reali, è un'avventura d'azione ambientata nel mondo del
traffico internazionale di armi. Il film segue le imprese del mercante
di armi Yuri Orlov (NICOLAS CAGE). Attraverso alcune delle zone di
guerra più pericolose, Yuri lotta per stare sempre un passo avanti a un
implacabile agente dell'Interpol (ETHAN HAWKE), ai suoi rivali in
affari e persino ad alcuni dei suoi clienti tra cui figurano i dittatori
più noti del pianeta. Il film approfondisce una conseguenza poco nota
della fine della Guerra Fredda: l'enorme quantitativo di armi andate
improvvisamente in disuso, vendute dagli stati dell'ex Unione Sovietica
ai paesi in via di sviluppo (in modo particolare all'Africa) e le
ingenti somme di denaro incassate dai trafficanti di armi che le hanno
vendute. Sono molti a ritenere che sia trattato del colpo più grosso del
XX secolo. Solo in Ucraina tra il 1982 e il 1992 sono state rubate armi
per un valore che supera i 32 miliardi di dollari. Nessun colpevole è
mai stato arrestato o perseguito.
